Bio Marwan Owaygen joined the UPE Team in October 2005 and is based at the MERO Office. Marwan joined the Centre after having served as Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Balamand, Lebanon. He holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Hohenheim in Germany (1999). The overall objective of his Ph.D. research was to provide knowledge on interdependencies between economically and ecologically oriented resource use and to test concepts which are both ecologically sound and economically viable for natural resources and for local communities, respectively. He has also conducted consultancy work for the World Bank, UNDP (United Nations Development Program) and UNEP (United Nations Environmental Program) in relation to studies for Lebanon, Jordan, Yemen and Iran. His research interests cover topics including cost assessment of environmental degradation, sustainable use of natural resources and rural development through ecotourism.
