Abstract

This project will allow the Centre d'enseignement et de recherche en communication (CERCOM), Côte d'Ivoire, in collaboration with researchers from other communications research institutions in the region, to study communication for environment and sustainable development. Researchers will examine the place of environment in the African media and the utilization of radio and television for development; and analyze the content of radio programs and selected journals with respect to their coverage of environmental news and issues. They will undertake case studies on the mechanisms of communication in rural communities and on access to information on the environment; collect information on traditional environmental knowledge; extrapolate communication strategies favouring better management of natural resources; analyze and compare the content of environmental messages in the respective presses of Senegal, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, and Burkina Faso; evaluate the audiences of electronic media in a limited number of countries; and make the research results available to public decision-makers and agents of change.
