Abstract
Among African countries, Cameroon ranks second, after Zaire, in forest-covered land. Although forestry offers vast opportunities for local enterprise, 90 percent of the timber is produced by foreign companies. Local ventures in the field are either short-lived or are soon incorporated in the work of foreign firms operating in the country. This project will assess and analyze the factors that determine the success or failure of local forestry enterprises and, in particular, the factors promoting or harming forestry industry in general. It will also analyze the problem of ownership and control in this sector by Cameroon; measure and compare the economic performance of local and foreign enterprises; and make policy recommendations.
