Abstract

The University Centre for Health Services (UCHS) conducts a 6-year training program for physicians and carries out operational research designed to obtain a continuous evaluation of the health situation and the use of health manpower. In order to improve and expand the health facilities and ensure that sufficient training is being offered, the UCHS needs information on all aspects of health personnel trained at UCHS and other institutions. The objectives of this project are to study the relationship between the various categories of health manpower with the tasks they perform.

Post-Project Summary

Researchers designed a questionnaire that was pretested, translated into French, and sent to health personnel in the country. Personnel included all UCHS-trained doctors, and those trained abroad and working in divisional hospitals, and all nurses, midwives, and nursing aides working in 14 out of 42 divisions. Where possible, questionnaire follow-ups were conducted by person or telephone. Analysis of returned questionnaires showed that the training provided for health personnel was relevant to their future duties. Participants identified areas requiring further training or upgrading, and also expressed a need for more supervision and a clearer definition of duties. Other findings showed a need for improved work ethics and professional conduct. Researchers recommended post-graduate training for doctors, and refresher courses for nurses and nursing aides. As well, it was suggested that the Ministry of Health write job descriptions; prepare a local standard treatment guide for lower-level staff; and provide better transportation, materials, and drugs.
