Abstract

The fuelwood crisis in Botswana is one of the most acute in Africa. The situation can be greatly alleviated by establishing small-scale woodlots in the few areas of the country that can support tree growth. This project will establish plantations of fast-growing adaptable species in and around small rural communities. Researchers will investigate nursery procedures for the germination, early growth and successful out-planting of indigenous and introduced trees and shrubs; determine cost-effective establishment methods to improve species survival and productivity; and test the performance of selected species in field trials.

Post-Project Summary

During this phase (January 1986-June 1989), research was carried out on species selection, nursery procedures, and establishment technologies for semi-arid afforestation. Data were collected between June and August, 1989, based on monitoring tree growth for suitability of three species of acacia and two provenances of eucalyptus for firewood plantations. Computerized data analysis confirmed the best performance for the Eucalyptus camaldulensis. From limited experience on single-purpose eucalyptus trials, researchers expanded the information base on adaptable multipurpose tree species appropriate to Botswana. Over 80 different species and provenances were evaluated, and researchers identified a few capable of growth under the country's harsh climatic conditions. Several establishment methods for plantations were evaluated; soil ridges that captured surface water runoff resulted in high survival rates for two- and three-year old seedlings. Work was begun to modify these planting techniques for small-scale farms using rudimentary equipment. On-farm trial plantings were established for the first time. In addition to the research results produced, the project strengthened the Forestry Association of Botswana as an institution promoting public education on environmental issues. Support continued in a second phase.
