Many people gave freely of their ideas and advice during the development of this book. This began with the participants of the CGIAR System-wide Program on Participatory Research on Gender Analysis/Natural Resources Institute (PRGA/NRI) workshop ‘Participatory Natural Resource Management Research: Continuing to Learn Together’ held at Chatham, UK, in September 1999, and supported by Kathryn Laing of PRGA and Claire Troy of NRI. Maria Fernandez was co-organizer of that event, and she continued as an early mover and shaker in the development of the book, the character of which was shaped by her inputs. Barry Blake, then at NRI, lent full encouragement to the workshop and the subsequent involvement of NRI staff in the editing and authorship for the book. We would also like to acknowledge the financial support given by IDRC to the Chatham workshop.

The 23 case studies presented at the workshop were too lengthy for inclusion in the book in full, and it was Trudy Brekelbaum who developed a format for summarizing them without losing their impact. Annie Jones then took up the challenge of summarizing the case studies, and met it valiantly. Phil Macoun stepped in at a critical moment to assist with the final editing of chapters. We are particularly grateful to those who have contributed material or suggestions to the chapter texts. A special mention in this regard goes to Hans Schreier and Sandra Brown.

We would like to recognize the Natural Resources Institute (NRI), Michigan State University, the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and the PRGA (particularly Jacqui Ashby and Anna Knox) for the support they provided to the editors’ committee.
