La conservación de variedades amenazadas que desarrollan agricultores y el cultivo y selección de nuevos cultivares, se consideran a menudo como actividades distintas que conciernen a organizaciones diferentes. El taller "Usando la diversidad" exploró lo que tienen en común ambos enfoques, y reunió a científicos, agricultores y trabajadores de ONG del Sur de Asia, que comparten la opinión de que la diversidad genética en la granja es clave para la seguridad alimentaria de la población rural y que los agricultores deben participar en su mantención y mejoramiento.
