Abstract
The Population Program of the Social Sciences Division has identified refugee research as one of the focal points of its support in Africa and Asia. This project in Somalia follows on other Centre-funded refugee projects in Africa and Asia. The purpose of these projects is to provide baseline socioeconomic and demographic data on refugees and host communities to assist in the formulation of better assistance programs. This project in Somalia will provide data which is not readily available on family size, structure and composition; existing family resources and income-generating activities; and available skills and employment patterns among refugee and non-refugee households. It will also support two workshops which will facilitate an exchange of information and experiences among researchers involved in Centre-supported projects in Africa and Asia and the dissemination of the research results to planners and policymakers in Africa and Asia.
