Abstract

Under the War-torn Societies Project (activities 93-0420 (000330) and 94-0414 (000853)), IDRC supported action-research in four countries emerging from protracted conflict, one of which was Somalia. The Somalia Program is an ongoing activity that is currently being supported by several donor agencies, including the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). This grant is designed to strengthen the gender component of the Somalia War-torn Societies Program by extending the engagement of a gender consultant for an additional 6 months. The consultant, Ms Faiza Warsame, will ensure that women's views are adequately represented in the project's main research thrust and that gender issues are incorporated into all project activities, such as written reports, discussion papers and workshops. As well, Ms Warsame will assist IDRC's Peace-building and Reconstruction program initiative in refining of its own gender strategy, by providing input on tools, strategies and planned activities.
