Abstract
Malawi, like many other countries in Africa, is rapidly advancing in various categories of industrial development including the agricultural, chemical, mining, and manufacturing sectors. This development has brought with it an increase in the number of accidents and fatalities, particularly related to the use of equipment, chemicals, and pesticides. The government recognizes that there is an urgent need to make the working population aware of the occupational health and safety hazards likely to arise in various workplaces as well as to alert the general population to hazards that can occur around their homes. To do this, the government needs to draw upon appropriate information resources. This project will establish an occupational health and safety information and documentation centre to compile data registers on factory inspection and accident reports; produce a bibliographic data base; and produce a newsletter, and information sheets and health safety guides.
