Abstract
Protein energy malnutrition (PEM), one of the main nutritional deficiency diseases, is a major public health problem in Malawi. Research that aims to help overcome this problem must be given high priority due to the substantial contribution of PEM to childhood morbidity and mortality. This project will assess the nutritional status of children aged 0-3 years in six rural communities in Mangochi district in the southern region of the country. The principal determinants of PEM in the study communities will also be investigated in terms of socioeconomic-cultural factors such as: socioeconomic status of the family; family structure; infant feeding practices; and the influence of seasonal variations in food availability. This project complements another IDRC-supported project in northern Malawi (Growth Faltering 3-P-87-0192).
