Abstract
Smallholders account for 78 percent of the cultivated area and 80 percent of agricultural production in the Republic of Malawi. Smallholders have increased their maize production but the infrastructure that encouraged this production cannot handle it. Those caught in this situation have not responded to a number of recent initiatives designed to affect their production processes. Understanding the criteria smallholders use in making decisions on allocation of inputs, products to be produced and disposition of production is important. This project seeks to understand the decision-making process used by smallholders regarding agricultural innovations. Researchers will survey 1000 smallholders in three Agricultural Development Districts. Questioning will focus on technology not known, technology tried and not adopted, and technology adopted.
