Abstract
Although handicraft enterprises are an important source of employment and income in Malawi, little is known about them. This project studies the contributions crafts make to the national economy, and the constraints to growth within the industry in terms of employment and foreign exchange earnings potential. They will also undertake in-depth case studies of three crafts with a view to understanding their socioeconomic features, organizational structures, production methods and marketing problems; and evaluate the role of institutions that currently provide financial and technical support.
