Abstract
The rapid expansion of Malawi's education system after independence in 1964 resulted in a general fall in the quality of education. At the secondary school level, for example, in the last 10 years there has been a downward trend in performance in the examinations given at the end of Junior Secondary School (Form 4) and Senior Secondary School (Form 6) respectively. This project assists the Malawi Certificate and Testing Board to study the causes of declining academic performance. The study examines the relationship between performance and pupils' family background (socioeconomic status, gender, age, and birth order) and such school-related variables as school and location, teachers, equipment, teaching aids, condition of school, and classroom and school learning environments). Project participants will analyze assessment procedures being used and make recommendations to improve the accuracy and validity of the examinations.
