Abstract
Malawi has begun to develop programs for low-cost rural water supply; one program involves a new design of shallow well which can be easily constructed by villagers. The government supplies cement, a concrete slab, and a locally assembled hand pump. The hand pump uses a plastic pipe, perspex plunger, and rubber foot valve. The objectives of this project are to define the design of the hand pump; involve students of the Malawi Polytechnic Institute in applied research on rural development problems; and develop ties between the Institute and government ministries.
Post-Project Summary
This project showed that low-cost, durable polyvinyl chloride (PVC) parts could be used to increase pump longevity. Existing handpumps were assessed during field visits, and researchers identified well and pump structures that needed improvement. The means to prevent water source contamination, and the wearing of pump parts and materials in pumpstands were determined. Suggestions to improve well water quality were also made. Researchers noted that about 28% of the PVC pumpstands required repairs, which were beyond the capabilities of field staff. However, steel pumpstands were found to be more durable and required minimal maintenance. Handpump revisions were made and the final test model (Mark V) was accepted by the government for large-scale installation. The project resulted in PVC component manufacture in Malawi, and the involvement of local villagers in pump installations. Changes in personnel at the Malawi Polytechnical Institute limited the participation of students in research.
