Abstract
A number of studies, including the World Bank's 2007 analysis of tertiary education in agriculture, have pointed out the urgent need to build Africa's institutional capacity in this area. Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), a consortium of 25 universities in Eastern, Central and Southern Africa, has supported postgraduate training and research in agriculture and natural resource management over the last 15 years. This grant will allow RUFORUM to offer 28 doctoral research awards in the areas of soil and water management at Sokoine University, Tanzania; aquaculture and fisheries at the Bunda College of Agriculture, University of Malawi; and dryland resource management at the University of Nairobi. The scholarships will include training in multidisciplinary research skills and help in publishing (at least) one peer-reviewed article and conference paper per doctoral student.
