Abstract
Malawi is a relatively small, land-locked country in southeastern Africa endowed with a rich and varied fauna and good transport infrastructure. The country depends on agriculture for 80% of its export earnings, yet imports most of the essential oils used in the manufacture of personal hygiene, pharmaceutical and food products. Some of these essential oils could be produced in Malawi. The country also uses a lot of chemical pesticides, which could be replaced by locally-produced biological pesticides. The objective of this project is to adapt and apply the results of IDRC-supported essential oil research in other countries and initiate the commercial production of essential oils from plants grown in Malawi.
