Abstract

Water supply is a constant problem for most of West and Central African countries. Traditionally, wells are built to catch groundwater. However, these wells not being deep enough, are often choked with sand. In an earlier phase, it was established that the phenomenon was not of eolian (wind) origin. This project will develop a well construction methodology adapted to the local conditions in the Sahelian zones of Cameroun and Senegal. It will verify the earlier conclusions on new wells in controlled situations; identify the exact causes of the obstruction by sand; propose measures to solve this problem; and disseminate the resulting information.
