Abstract

As part of its struggle against desertification, the government of Burkina Faso has been engaged in an extensive reforestation plan covering close to 10,000 hectares every year. Unfortunately, their success rate is low due to livestock damage. The first phase of the "Hedges" project provided an opportunity to experiment with various species and test techniques for growing hedges. These hedges, when planted around reforested areas, provide efficient and inexpensive protection for tree nurseries. In the second phase of the project, research continues and a popularization campaign will be undertaken using mini-nurseries, simplified growing techniques, and such various forms of encouragement as distribution of transplants and training.

Post-Project Summary

The researchers continued to carry out observations and measurements on plantations established during the first phase of the project; they evaluated the best pruning time for the various species; they field tested live fences obtained by using seedlings that were planted directly and as buds; and they introduced technical data developed by users in six provinces, where they also provided the necessary inputs (plants, seeds, small nursery equipment). The project allowed the researchers to identify five species that had adapted well to the severe ecological conditions in Burkina and, in 2-3 years, provided a barrier that was almost impenetrable to livestock. The project also made it possible to develop techniques for planting, for fence management, and economizing the process of planting live fences. After testing various methods, the researchers chose direct planting over nursery-raised seedlings, in lightly turned soil instead of in furrows, which required a heavy investment in labour.
