Abstract

This project will tackle the primary obstacle facing urban agricultural development in West and Central Africa: lack of funding. This deficiency has been identified by farmers within the Réseau francophone pour l'agriculture urbaine en Afrique de l'Ouest et du Centre (RFAU/AOC). Researchers will endeavor to: evaluate funding supply and demand in target cities (Cotonou, Ouagadougou, Nouakchott, Dakar, Thiès, Louga, Saint-Louis); facilitate farmers' access to credit; promote appropriation of research results by lending institutions; and widely disseminate the study findings. It is expected that, as a result of the project, financial institutions will be more inclined to invest in urban agricultural projects, farmers will be better prepared to manage their requests for funding and municipalities will be increasingly aware of the importance of urban agriculture.
