Abstract
Acne is a follicular dermatosis that affects 72 to 80% of teenagers in Burkina Faso, a country that has one doctor per 28,000 inhabitants and four dermatologists for the entire population. Despite the extent of this pathology (considering its frequency and consequences), few studies have been conducted in Africa. In Burkina Faso, only one study was carried out in 1992. It found that this disease was the second most common complaint (8%), after eczema (20.2%). The most affected group (10-24-year-olds) currently represents 29.1% of the country's total population; it is thus understandable that this affection may have significant socioeconomic impact. It is therefore important to control acne in order to prevent the psychosocial effects, which hinder teenagers' performance. In particular, it is essential to determine the extent of acne in the student population and measure the scope of the problems that it creates. This study will examine the epidemiologic aspects of acne in secondary schools in the city of Ouagadougou. Its specific objectives are the following: to draw up the epidemiologic profile of acne sufferers; determine the prevalence of acne; and describe the clinical aspects and psychological effects on teenagers. The anticipated results are for a better understanding of acne and improved therapeutic control in Burkina Faso schools.
