Abstract

The first phase of this project allowed the recipient to conserve on microfilm and capture in a computer database, a massive body of epidemiological information on such diseases as schistosomiasis, malaria, onchocerciasis, etc., dating from the beginning of the century. The information came from nine participating research institutions, specializing in such areas as nutrition, leprosy, tropical ophthalmology, communicable diseases, etc. While a considerable amount of documentation was processed, the collection of statistical epidemiological data remained at the rudimentary stage.

This second phase project will endeavour to ensure that timely information on priority health problems is available to political decision-makers and scientists in the region. The specific objectives include: making a critical review of the health information systems developed by each of the participating countries; elaborating a standardized system for the collection, analysis, and communication of epidemiological surveillance data; testing and evaluating the establishment of sentinel sites; and assuring the production and dissemination of global and country analyses of the overall health situation, with emphasis on priority health problems in the region.
