Abstract

Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland have a long tradition of offering asylum to refugees from South Africa and Namibia. Nevertheless, refugees represent a significant burden for them since they already have great difficulty providing for their own poor majority. The capacity of these countries to respond is seriously limited by the lack of socioeconomic and demographic data on the refugee population. This project will gather socioeconomic and demographic data on refugees in these three countries. Researchers will examine services provided to refugees; assess and recommend income-generating activities; and analyze laws pertaining to refugees and the adequacy of legal protection.
