In 2006, a consortium of economic research centres in four Central African countries (Cameroon, Chad, Congo and Gabon) decided to assess the contribution of microfinance institutions to economic growth and poverty reduction in the Central African region which, despite considerable mineral and forestry resources, remains one of the poorest on the continent. Available national survey data were complemented by light surveys focusing on research issues. Sponsored studies and detailed research proposals were developed and launched in all four countries. IDRC also provided a two-year grant totalling CFA F 230 000 000, through its Globalization, Growth and Poverty program, to enable the centres identified to conduct research aimed at enlightening economic decisions, while building the capacities of their researchers. A regional workshop was held from 23 to 25 March 2010 in Yaoundé, Cameroon. It was attended by researchers, decision-makers and media representatives from all four project countries.
