In the past 30 years, IDRC has supported some 2,500 research projects directed and managed by African researchers and institutions. IDRC’s research focus in Africa has evolved in response to the changing needs and priorities of the countries it serves. Challenges being addressed include:

• Supporting peacebuilding and post-conflict reconstruction in the Southern African region;
  
  
• Applying information and communication technologies to the social and economic development of African communities;
  
  
• Conserving and making sustainable and equitable use of biodiversity and natural resources;
  
  
• Increasing food security in environmentally sound ways, including urban food production and distribution systems;
  
  
• Improving water demand management and ensuring fair and equitable use of water and land resources;
  
  
• Improving ecosystems management in ways that enhance people's health and the health of the ecosystem;
  
  
• Increasing employment and income generation, including enhancing economic livelihoods – particularly for women and youth – and strengthening the informal sector;
  
  
• Assisting in countries' efforts to participate more effectively in the global economy and to adopt efficient and effective policy frameworks;and
  
  
• Improving governance and building institutional capacity to develop policies, implement programs, and provide social services equitably and efficiently
