PAN Tibet - Chinese Language ITrain Materials

Right: Potola

In April 1999, the Tibet University (TU) received a satellite link, connecting Lhasa to Chengdu, the southwest regional node of China's academic Internet network, CERNET. Although the Chinese Government resources have brought in this costly infrastructure, no dollar resources are available to help TU establish campus-wide access and provide Internet access to R&D organisations outside of TU. To assist Internet access become widespread in Tibet, IDRC is supporting a PAN-Tibet project to enable key R&D and government institutions within Tibet to access the Internet for communications and to use Internet tools for educational, research and development work. The project personnel at the Tibet Academy of Agriculture and Animal Sciences (TAAAS) in Lhasa have begun project work in earnest. They have translated ITrain materials into Chinese for a web development training course scheduled for May 2000 in Lhasa.
