One of the many designs exhibited in "The Sepik - Art and Meaning"

The Sepik River valley, located on the northeast side of Papua New Guinea, is one of the most prolific art producing centers in the region. Since its introduction to the rest of the world, the area's art has been highly prized for its intricate carving and its sheer visual power. Yet, much of the meaning behind the work is slowly disappearing as younger generations lose touch with their traditions.

The site, "The Sepik - Art and Meaning", uses HTML and Macromedia Flash to help preserve some of the stories and meanings behind the art and design of the area. It showcases a selection of designs and stories aimed at enhancing the viewer's appreciation of Sepik art by illuminating some of the culture behind the works.
