In April 2006, the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) welcomed Nobel Prize winner Amartya Sen to Ottawa, Canada as the inaugural lecturer for the IDRC Speaker Series. 

Professor Sen's talk, which was based on his most recent book, Identity and Violence: The Illusion of Destiny, drew a crowd of nearly 500 spectators to the National Gallery of Canada.
