Professor Asit K. Biswas, a long-time partner with IDRC on water-related research was awarded the 2006 Stockholm Water Prize on 24 August 2006 from Swedish Crown Princess Victoria at a ceremony at Stockholm City Hall.
The award ceremony is held in connection with World Water Week, 20-26 August, 2006, in the Swedish capital, the leading annual global meeting place for the world’s diverse water community. A cash prize of US $150 000 was awarded. “Professor Biswas is awarded the Stockholm Water Prize for his outstanding and multi-faceted contributions to global water resource issues, including research, education and awareness, water management, human and international relations in both developed and developing countries,” said the Nominating Committee in its Citation.
“Professor Biswas … has over a broad front applied his skills internationally, thereby adding new dimensions to the wise use and management of the global water resources.”
Biswas, an Indian-born Canadian citizen, is a highly respected advocate and educator for sustainable water management and improved delivery of water and sanitation services.
Biswas has chaired the Middle East Water Commission, and has acted as an advisor to policymakers in water and environmental management in 17 countries, to six heads of United Nations agencies, and to other intergovernmental and international organizations. He is currently president of the Third World Centre for Water Management, the Mexico City-based think tank he founded in 1998.
He is a co-editor of the IDRC co-publication, Water Management in Islam, and has been working with IDRC’s Middle East and North Africa Office to organize a workshop on water as a human right.
Founded in 1990, the Stockholm Water Prize is presented annually to an individual, organization, or institution for outstanding water-related activities.
