The International Development Research Centre is founded on supporting researchers in developing countries to use science and technology to find practical, long-term solutions to the social, economic, and environmental problems they face. Thirty-five years of programming of a global and thematically diverse nature ensures a rich body of knowledge and experience. The
IDRC Intellectual History Project will capture the vivid personalities and stories that have had an impact on science, technology, and subsequently, the lives of people in the developing world. The project will also reflect and critically assess
IDRC’s role as an early practitioner of Southern-led programming, based on the principles of partnership, capacity building, and the facilitation of a Southern-based agenda, without imposing the influence of Canadian ideas or products. The book will engage readers with a narrative that does justice to the Centre’s unique and colourful history, while based on sound critical reflection and learning. The Centre’s contributions to the creation of ideas, tools, methods and technologies in developing countries will be examined and assessed.
The Centre intends to publish the final product at an academic (or similar) press, subject to independent peer review. The intellectual freedom of the Contractors will be protected. Complementary ancillary products will be created to encourage more interest in
IDRC’s story and to reach several different audiences. The support and close collaboration with
IDRC’s staff, Governors and alumni, as well as the full use of
IDRC’s information systems, will aid in facilitating a deep and dynamic look into
IDRC’s past.
