Prev News 169 of 223 Next

IDRC Governor Angela Cropper has won the Zayed Prize for Environmental Action Leading to Positive Change in Society.  Ms. Cropper, co-founder and president of the Cropper Foundation in Trinidad and Tobago, shares the award with Emil Salim, the former Indonesian State Minister for Population and the Environment.

The Zayed Prize, established in 2001, is awarded every two years and consists of three categories: Global Leadership for the Environment, Scientific and Technological Achievement, and Environmental Action Leading to Positive Change in Society.  Winners in each category are awarded a cash prize.

United Nations’ Secretary-General Kofi Annan was named the winner of the Global Leadership for the Environment award. The Scientific and Technological Achievement award went to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment project, which Annan created.

More than 1 300 scientists from 95 countries were involved in the research project, which aims to produce a definitive snapshot of the planet's environmental health.

Mohamed A. Bin Fahad, Chairman of the Zayed Prize Higher Committee said that the Committee “is hopeful that the Award will be an incentive to Annan, Ms. Cropper, and Professor Salim to push for more sustainable life on Earth.”

This is the third round of the Zayed Prize, which was created to acknowledge the environmental commitment of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin-Sultan Al Nahyan.

Angela Cropper was appointed to IDRC’s Board of Governors in June 2005.  Ms Cropper is co-founder and President of the Cropper Foundation, a not-for-profit organization contributing to public policy for sustainable development.  She also co-chairs the Assessment Panel of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment.  Other positions she has held include Chair-elect of the Board of Trustees of the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), and Chair of the Board of Trustees of Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation and Development in Guyana.
