Nelson Mandela

The world has witnessed the death of apartheid: from the dramatic 1990 release of Nelson Mandela from prison to the fully democratic election of the Government of National Unity in April 1994.

Building a New South Africa documents an important Canadian contribution to this historical event. In a series of four missions, Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC) assisted the democratic movement, and the subsequent Mandela government, to develop its policies on economics, urban issues, science and technology, and the environment.

Presented together for the first time, the four mission reports provide an inside look at the rebuilding of a nation. Together, they form a comprehensive platform for democratic renewal that incorporates the concerns of equity and sustainability.
