Abstract
Palestinian women and girls account for over half of the Arab population in Israel, which makes up approximately 17% of the Israeli population. Palestinian women and girls are marginalized on two fronts: as women in Arab society and as Palestinians in Israeli society. This situation affects the economic status of Palestinian women, as seen, for example, in the feminization of poverty, low female labour force participation and high female unemployment. This grant will allow MADA al-Carmel (the Arab Center for Applied Social Research) to undertake a comprehensive investigation of Palestinian women's economic situation in Israel, with particular focus on the policies and processes that affect their ability to obtain an education, find a job, start a business, and participate in the formal or informal economy. The research results will be used to inform an evidence-based policy dialogue on the economic status of Palestinian women. Building the capacity of junior Palestinian researchers to conduct research and engage in public policy dialogue will be an important aspect of this project.
