Abstract

Palestinian women and girls account for over half of the Arab population in Israel, which comprises approximately 17% of the Israeli population. Palestinian women and girls are marginalized on two fronts: as women in Arab society and as Palestinians in Israeli society. As the least educated, least paid, poorest and least represented in leadership positions, Palestinian women are among the weakest segments of Israeli society. Because there is little reliable information about Palestinian women in Israel, advocacy for improved policy is weak. There has also been no sustained and comprehensive study of Palestinian women's experience in Israel in its historical and social context. There has also been no attempt to consider Palestinian women in Israel as a potential force for social change in both Palestinian and Israeli societies. The Arab Centre for Applied Social Research (MADA), an eminent research and advocacy organization, wishes to strengthen its capacity to research on the status of Palestinian women in Israel. This grant will support the establishment of a gender unit at MADA.
