Abstract
Swaziland's traditional livestock production system i.e. communal grazing, has resulted in overstocking and overgrazing, deteriorating pastures, and severe soil erosion. This project will identify useful pasture species and develop more productive, less damaging management techniques adapted to the social realities of Swaziland's small-scale production systems. It is anticipated that the technologies will be adopted by commercial and small-scale dairy farmers.
Post-Project Summary
The project was the first systematic study to be conducted on pasture introduction in the country. Preliminary results suggest that researchers found some technically promising pasture seeds in the natural veld. Various indigenous species were evaluated for their drought resistance and other qualities. Nurseries were established to evaluate newly introduced species; to serve as demonstration plots; and to be used as teaching sites for university students.
Researchers did not develop technologies for pasture establishment and management; nor were any policy recommendations put forth to the Ministry for pasture improvement. The project did, however, help to establish links between researchers in Swaziland and elsewhere.
