Abstract

The government of Cameroon has initiated a series of studies concerning its general demographic situation. Although in the last fifteen years a certain amount of sociodemographic data has been collected on the cities of Douala and Yaoundé, no systematic analysis has been done. This project will study existing data and survey 4500 migrants and 500 non-migrants. The project will assess the migrants' motivations, their ways of adaptation, and the problems of rapid urban growth. It will offer a better understanding of the demographic impact of internal migrations on the general urban population and thus try to solve the problems of influx into these two cities. The data thus obtained will help political authorities to integrate the migration variable in various economic and social development plans.
