Abstract
A decade of armed conflict has seriously undermined research capacity in Burundi. A number of qualified scientists have left the country and most of the scientific equipment and research facilities were destroyed. With the recent return to peace and democratic governance, the country recognizes the need to increase agricultural productivity and ensure food security. In the meantime, however, agricultural research has moved away from the traditional top-down model toward more participatory approaches. This grant will provide ISABU with the necessary support and mentoring to develop a strategic plan for agricultural research, and quality research proposals for mobilizing resources.
