Abstract

The Regional East African Community Health (REACH) policy initiative aims to improve health and health equity in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda by facilitating the translation of health research into policy and practice. An earlier grant (104298) supported the establishment of a regional hub for REACH in Arusha, Tanzania, and individual country nodes. This grant will support the continued development of REACH with emphasis on the linkages between the country nodes and the Arusha hub; on the relationship between REACH and the East African Health Research Commission (EAHRC); and on the initiative's resource mobilization strategy. To accomplish this will require additional human resources. This grant will allow REACH to engage the services of an interim executive director in the person of the current executive director of EAHRC, and cover the salary of the technical officer, for six months. The interim executive director will design a framework for collaboration between the two entities while the technical officer will assist by developing funding proposals, convening meetings and providing overall program support. The grant will also cover the cost of meetings and travel required during the same period, particularly a three-day preparatory meeting prior to the Steering Committee meeting scheduled for 28 January 2008 in Arusha.
