Abstract

Recent armed conflicts in eastern Congo and Burundi have resulted in unprecedented degradation of natural resources, massive displacement of populations toward fragile ecosystems and a breakdown of local institutions governing collective natural resources. This project aims to develop participatory mechanisms for good governance of natural resources with a view to sustainable growth of agricultural productivity, revenue generation and environmental rehabilitation. It will encourage the emergence and reinforcement of female leadership, and promote the rights of women and displaced households to access, use and manage communal natural resources in a more equitable manner. Finally, the project will reinforce and mobilize the capacity of research and development institutions to produce results that inform policies, practices and technologies for the wellbeing of poor communities that depend on communal natural resources.
