Abstract
In order to produce wood, protect the soil, and improve the environment, the government of Burkina Faso embarked on a program of reforestation and agroforestry plantation. However, a study undertaken recently by the Centre national des semences forestières (CNSF) has established that the success rate of the seeds utilized does not exceed 60%. This translates into increased costs and a waste of seeds. In an earlier phase of this project, the CNSF gained considerable expertise in the technology of seeds and consequently is able now to supply close to 70% of the country's grain needs. This second phase will provide CNSF with additional equipment and personnel training to consolidate its structure, and to achieve its research and development goals. CNSF's expertise and facilities will enable it to play an active role within the new regional seed network of the Sahel.
