Abstract

The Centre canadien d'étude et de coopération internationale (CECI), in cooperation with IDRC's Micro Impacts of Macroeconomic and Adjustment Policies (MIMAP) program initiative in Burkino Faso, operates a Poverty Monitoring System (PMS) that involves village communities through a Community-based Monitoring System (CBMS) and a Poverty and Economic Policy (PEP) sub-network. The first phase of this project (003238/96-1051) involved only 110 households. Phase II (100888) applied the same method in 39 villages and seven sectors of the Yako commune. Phase II confirmed the feasibility of the system and facilitated the collection of reliable, exhaustive and qualitative data for a poverty profile using participative and responsibility-driven methods. It is yet to be demonstrated, however, whether the system can be maintained and replicated by other village communities. This grant will support a third phase of the PMS / MIMAP experiment with a view to designing a functional, long-term, usable system to monitor poverty can be used by village communities and other structures emerging from decentralization. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the effectiveness of poverty reduction interventions in Burkina Faso.
