Abstract

Many African countries have not given sufficient place to agriculture and rural development in their development strategies. This grant will enable the Ministry of Animal Resources in Burkina Faso, together with the École inter-États des sciences et médecine vétérinaires (EISMV), to organize a three-day workshop on animal husbandry and animal research in Ouagadougou in March 2003. Each of the six participating countries (Bénin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Sénégal) will present a document on its policy for developing animal husbandry and animal production within the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD). Other resource persons, including representatives of associations of producers (breeders, farmers), merchants and manufacturers, will be approached to discuss these national plans and proposed regional actions. A special half-day session will be organized for small breeders and farmers. The meeting should result in a regional plan of action and a committee to track the development of the animal husbandry and animal production sector as NEPAD is implemented.
