Abstract

In the context of IDRC's MIMAP (Micro Impacts of Macroeconomic and Adjustment Policies) program initiative, a consortium of institutions in Burkina Faso has carried out a pilot study to verify the feasibility of a participatory system of monitoring poverty through the identification of relevant indicators (96-1051/003238 and 100888). This project will enable researchers to refine the methodology with a view to its application to a whole administrative entity, such as a department. The researchers will develop a poverty monitoring system adapted to the realities and capacities of the communities; describe the various facets of poverty in Yako department by means of household behavioural indicators; and promote local capacity for planning, monitoring and evaluating anti-poverty interventions. The overall goal is to enable local communities to identify the various elements of the problem and effectively engage in action to improve the situation.
