Abstract

Aware of the extent of poverty in Burkina Faso, the government has undertaken to modernize and diversify agricultural production. One of the key strategies of the approach being adopted is the promotion of the fruits and vegetables sector, as well as the processing of yields in small businesses. A number of research projects on non-timber forest products have shown that wild fruits play a decisive role in the subsistence of people without farmland. However, the exploitation of these products, which undergo very little added-value processing, remains at the subsistence level. This project is designed to help combat poverty and improve the food security of populations through the preservation and development of wild orchards, while developing a conservation strategy for this natural resource. The term "wild" is used to describe these fruit trees because of the limited scientific knowledge about their nutritional and therapeutic potential, as well as their cultivation.
