Abstract

Even though it began rather late, scientific and technological research in Burkina Faso is among the most productive in West Africa. Thanks to this research a stock of knowledge is available, some of which is applicable to development activities. For example, agricultural research has resulted in the development of new varieties, new processing technologies and various cropping systems that have greatly contributed to the growth of production. Nonetheless, there are many other technologies in various fields that are unknown to the general public and in limited use. The Forum national de la recherche scientifique et des innovations technologiques - FRSIT (National Forum on Scientific Research and Technological Innovations) has been held every two years since it was instituted in 1995 in order to overcome the constraints surrounding the use of research results. With long-term support, FRSIT could help create a research environment that is viable, stable and productive. This grant will contribute to the fourth annual FRSIT to be held in Ouagadougou 3-8 April 2000 on the theme of the role of scientific research in addressing the main challenges of the third Millennium: health, food security and the environment.
