Abstract
Globalization, the increasing alignment of national economies based on the rules of an international economy, has reached a record level, giving rise to concern and debate. Although it seems irreversible, should governments passively submit to these pressures at the risk of losing their capacity to develop and implement national policies? How will they meet the needs and expectations of their populations? These are increasingly pertinent questions in poor, landlocked countries such as Burkina Faso. To examine this topic, Burkina authorities are presenting a symposium from September 8-10, 1999, entitled Comment diversifier les sources de la croissance au Burkina Faso dans le contexte de la mondialisation et de la régionalisation de l'économie. The symposium will seek to stimulate strategic reflection on development in Burkina Faso and make operational recommendations to foster better integration of the country into the global economy. It will also articulate a vision for the country's short, medium, and long-term challenges and opportunities in order to anticipate the behaviour (decisive or aggressive) of Burkina Faso within the context of economic globalization. The grant is to support the symposium.
