Abstract
How can Africa develop itself? This question, which was the primary concern of Africans with the arrival of independence more than forty years ago, remains current to this day. It is even more crucial considering that the situation seems to be worsening in many respects. While it is true that we have seen renewed growth in the region in recent years, on the order of 5%, the effects of this renewal are not seen in the everyday life of the populations. Sharing the benefits of growth is a real challenge. Economic reforms implemented over the past twenty years have only achieved very limited results, and sometimes at enormous social costs. This activity seeks to continue the reflection on the issue of sustainable development in West and Central Africa and will lead to a publication on the topic. To this effect, a consultant will be hired to coordinate the activities, under the leadership of IDRC's Regional Office for West and Central Africa.
