Abstract

Burkina Faso is a Sahelian country and a member of the Inter-State Committee against Drought in Sahel (CILSS), and is one of the less-developed countries. The awareness of the vital nature of the fight against desertification in Burkina Faso does not date back only to the vigorous action of the last several years during the negotiations on the International Convention to combat Desertification (CID). Burkina Faso has recognized a long time ago the need to integrate environmental concerns with development problems.

This project is an application to IDRC to contribute to the mobilization of technical and financial support and, more specifically, to support the development of the Burkinabe National Action Program (NAP) through an action research approach in order to make it more transparent, more participative and to allow the development of indicators for following- up and evaluating the approach and the implementation of the NAP.

The grant will cover three complementary phases. The first phase would be implemented at the National Council for Environmental Management (CONAGESE) and would allow to proceed with the required consultation for a national forum. The second phase would also be implemented at CONAGESE in other to support action research to make the consultation project more participative and develop follow-up and evaluation methods and progress indicators. Phase III will be implemented by the Association of Volunteers for Development (AVD) which participated to all negotiations concerning CID.
