Abstract
The principal objective of Botswana's development strategy is to reduce the economy's dependence on mineral exports and the livestock sector, through diversification and growth of the rural economy. This strategy must also address the shorter-term problem of food security. This project will investigate the premise that expenditure patterns in rural areas vary according to type of income, and that saving and investment behaviour may respond in very different ways to various types of public policies. A pilot study will be undertaken involving the microeconomic analysis of income, expenditure, consumption, and investment patterns in four villages. If the results so indicate, coverage will be expanded in a second phase with the aim of determining the appropriate mix of policies for longer-term development of the rural economy.
