Abstract

Science and technology activities in Botswana are carried out in a number of institutions, generally working in isolation from one another. To help these institutions to coordinate their efforts, this project will take inventory of science and technology resources and activities in Botswana; identify the extent to which the government's priorities for development are assisted or hindered by national scientific and technological capability; and propose a design for a national science and technology information system.

Post-Project Summary

Researchers assessed science education; technical and vocational training; research and development activities; and existing information systems in Botswana. A standard questionnaire was sent to all government and parastatal organizations, and some private organizations to determine scientific and technological activities. Officials from these institutions were also interviewed. The main finding was that the country lacked the necessary infrastructure to handle science and technology matters. A science and technology council was recommended to formulate national policies with the Botswana Technology Centre (BTC) to implement them. BTC would be the focal point of an information system to coordinate and promote scientific research. Other recommendations included training and technology in other sectors; formulation of technology importation policies; and more links between the government and university researchers. Areas for further study were noted. Results were presented to the government at a meeting at the end of the project.
